Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tips

Are you planning a Uganda gorilla trekking safari? Spice your adventure even more and enjoy a satisfying gorilla trekking experience by understanding these Uganda gorilla trekking tips.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience requires some preparation to make the most of it. Here are practical tips to guide you before, during, and after your gorilla encounter.

Gorilla Trekking Tips before meeting the gorillas

  1. Choose the Best Time to Trek

It’s important to know that Uganda’s gorilla trekking may be done all year-round, but certain months are definitely better than others. Choosing a particular season gives a desired gorilla trekking experience:

Dry seasons (June-August and December-February): During these months, the gorilla trails are less slippery, making the trek easier. It’s however important to know that may travelers prefer these months and therefore, if you are planning a gorilla trek during this season, an earlier preparation must be done to avoid chances of missing the available gorilla permits.

Rainy seasons (March-May and September-November): During these months, there are fewer tourists and this mean quieter parks, but trails can be muddy and more challenging. Choosing gorilla trekking during this period may save you some money as the lodges are cheaper.

  1. Pick the Right Location

We understand that whenever you are planning a Uganda gorilla trek, you have a particular expectation. Because of this, we suggest you speak to our consultant to advice the right gorilla trekking destination and sector because different sectors offer unique experiences.

For example, senior adults may inform us to have a nearby gorilla family arranged for them in a fairly easy-to-track gorilla family and sector.

Bwindi offers more trekking options, while Mgahinga has a single family but stunning scenery. Both parks require a gorilla trekking permit.

  1. Book Your Gorilla Trekking Permit Early

Permits are mandatory and without it, you cannot see gorillas however, these gorilla permits have limited to ensure the gorillas sustainability. Each permit allows one hour with a gorilla family and costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents.

Booking the gorilla permits in advance gives you a peace of mind to prepare and enjoy your gorilla adventure. We recommend you book at least 3-6 months in advance, especially during the peak season.

  1. Prepare Physically

It goes without saying that Gorilla trekking requires some level of physical fitness as it involves hiking steep and uneven terrain. These simple adventures aren’t challenging and can be done by anyone who can walk a fairly flat surface for about 3-5kilometers.

To prepare, we recommend;

  • You focus on cardio and leg strength and do some simple stretches so that you are adventure ready.
  • Practice walking long distances to ensure endurance.
  • Planning a longer trip that gives you enough time to stretch before the gorilla trek may be considered appropriate.

Gorilla trekking tips to follow when in the presence of gorillas.

You have looked forward to this day for a long time, you have been planning this awesome adventure and now with the help of gorilla guides, you are in the presence of gorillas.

We understand encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is irresistibly exciting but to ensure the safety of both you and the gorillas, follow these practical tips when you’re with them:

Maintain at least 7 meter Distance: Gorillas are wild animals and need space to feel comfortable. Stay at least 7 meters (23 feet) away from them at all times. This also helps prevent the spread of diseases and minimizes stress for the gorillas since gorillas are susceptible to human sicknesses.

Avoid Direct Eye Contact: While gorillas are generally gentle giants, prolonged eye contact can be interpreted as provoking. Because of this, do not look into their eyes for longer than 30 seconds. Be safe and enjoy your adventure. Instead, keep your gaze low and observe them respectfully from the side.

Keep Your Voice Low:  Just like in any home setting, when you visit someone at their homes, you do not want to discomfort them, similarly, speak softly and avoid loud noises or random movements. The forest is their home, and minimizing disturbance ensures a better experience for everyone.

Follow the Ranger Guide’s Instructions: Park rangers are experienced, friendly and have been properly trained to best understand the gorilla behavior. Following their guidance regarding where to stand, how to move, and all the gorilla trekking dos and don’ts shall ensure the very best of your experience.

Avoid Eating or Drinking: Do not eat or drink while near the gorillas. This prevents accidental littering and keeps the gorillas from associating humans with food, which can alter their natural behavior. Also keep in mind that you aren’t allowed to feed the gorillas.

Respect the Time Limit:  Each group is allowed only one hour with a gorilla family. This limit reduces stress on the animals and ensures fair access for other visitors. Make the most of this time by observing the gentle giants as they play, relate and feed.

Be Ready to Back Away

If a gorilla approaches you, stay calm and follow the ranger’s instructions. Back away slowly to give them space. Do not run or make a random movement. Gorillas may be big but they are also very playful.

Avoid Flash Photography: Much as photography is allowed, you can only take photos without flashes as this may affect the gorilla’s health or even provoke them. Flash can startle gorillas and is strictly prohibited. Use a camera with good low-light settings to capture clear images without a flash.

Do Not Touch the Gorillas: No matter how close they come, resist the urge to touch them. Physical contact can spread diseases or trigger defensive reaction, also this may lure them to attack you.

Leave No Trace: Take all your belongings and any waste with you. Preserving the forest’s pristine condition is essential for conservation

Hire a Porter: Porters are available at the trekking sites to help carry your backpack or assist during steep climbs. Hiring a porter supports the local community and makes your trek easier.

Be Patient and Flexible

From and back to the starting point, your entire trekking experience can take 2-6 hours, depending on last known gorilla location. Be prepared for a long hike and enjoy the process of navigating the forest and feel free to alert your ranger guide if you feel tired. They will wait for you.

Conclusion
