What you need to know is Congo is not most visited and because of this the wildlife and nature here is as wild as it should be. Prepare to be amazed by wildlife and not to be crowded as in other countries.

What are Congo’s main tourist attractions?

The main attraction of the Democratic Republic of Congo is gorilla trekking. Congo’s eastern region is home to two subspecies of these endangered gentle giants making Congo the only country of the three Gorilla trekking countries with both eastern lowland gorilla, which is found only in Congo and nowhere else in the world and can only be tracked in Kahuzi Biega National Park and the famous adorable Mountain gorillas found in Congo’s Virunga.

Kahuzi Biega is located northwest of the city of Bukavu situated in the southern tip of Lake Kivu on the border with Rwanda. Tracking eastern lowland gorillas in Conogo is just as rewarding as visiting the better-known mountain gorillas.

In fact some guests prefer tracking the Eastern Low land gorillas in the Kahuzi Biega than going for the normal mountain gorilla trekkin which is somewhat more expensive compared to the low land.

Congo Gorilla Trekking Frequently asked Questions

How does gorilla trekking in DR Congo compare to other countries?

The gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi Biega is pretty similar to trekking gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda except you get to go Lowland gorilla trekkin instead of visiting the mountain gorillas.

However, as visitor numbers are still very low, the Kahuzi Biega experience feels more exclusive and the setting is more remote. The number of permits allocated per gorilla group is only four to six (less than the eight permits allocated per group in Uganda and Rwanda).

A big difference between trekking in Kahuzi Biega and doing the same activity in Uganda or Rwanda is that the gorilla trekking of Kahuzi-Biega is somewhat easier compared to that of Rwanda and Uganda.

Lastly, a gorilla trekking permit in DRC costs US$400 per person as opposed to US$800 in Uganda or US$1,500 in Rwanda. Making it the cheapest place to easily see gorillas in their natural habitat.

Is a DR Congo safari safe?

If you are planning a lowland gorilla trekking to Kahuzi-Biega or a Ngiragongo hiking adventure, you definitely have very little to worry about.

This part of the country has been considered very safe for the past 10 years especially with the high deployment of military and security protocols. You have enough time to focus on your adventure than on your safety.

Can I extend my East African safari with a trip to Congo (DRC)?

If you are planning a safari to Tanzania or Kenya, you can extend it perfectly well with a departure from Kigali to proceed for your Congo gorilla only or Congo Gorilla and Nyiragongo hiking safari.

If you have a safari in Rwanda, the most suitable extension would be immediately after your Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park, which is very close to Kamembe and Bukavu.

You can equally enjoy a couple of nights in Akagera National Park as you explore the famed African Big 5 games and proceed for a swift transfer to Congo’s Kahuzi-Biega Gorilla park.

If you require help planning this, get in touch with us and we shall be happy yo have this perfectly arranged for you.

How much will a DR Congo safari cost?

This cost includes lowland gorilla trekking permit, transportation, accommodation and guide’s fees.

The most recommended Congo safari is 4 Days Gorilla Trekking & Nyiragongo hiking safari that gives you enough time to explore and appreciate the beautiful endowment Congo has to offer. this however, attracts additional USD 600-800 depending on the accommodation of choice.

Visiting Democratic Republic of the Congo for gorilla trekking or Nyiragongo hiking is best done in the dry season from June to September.

Located in the mountainous area, the area is very wet and receives rainfall almost throughout the year, but June to September is drier and the forest trails tend to be less slippery.
