This 3 days Akagera National park safari takes you to explore the very best games of Rwanda. The safari takes you to one of Rwanda’s most popular wildlife conservation sites for one of the best game drive experiences in East Africa. Akagera National Park is located on the Eastern side of Rwanda close to the border with Tanzania. It covers an area of about 433 square miles. Akagera was founded in 1934 and is Rwanda’s only Savannah park. The park is named after the Kagera river which feeds Lake Ihema and other water bodies in the park before releasing most of its load in Lake Victoria.
Our 3 Days Akagera Wildlife safari package includes 3 games drive and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. A safari in Akagera national park is very convenient because the park is only 3 hours’ drive away from the capital. It is important to move with a park guide while visiting Akagera national park. They know the park well and can take you to the best viewing spots. If you are interested in a shorter safari, you can check out our 2 days Akagera Wildlife tour package.

Upon your arrival in Kigali, our Friendly Gorilla professional safari guide shall pick you up in the morning from the airport or your hotel in Kigali. After briefing you about the tour, you will have a Kigali city experience where you will visit the city markets, Kigali genocide museum, the former presidential palace, a few art shops and other landmarks. After completing the city tour, you will leave for Akagera national park. The journey to Akagera National Park takes between 2 to 3 hours.
Before reaching the park, you will have a brief stop at the Nyakarambi village to learn about the cow dung paintings by the Kakira women cooperative. Their unique style of decorating houses using cow 3 Days tour of Akagera National Parkdung has intrigued many a visitor since it was started by Prince Kakira. The cow dung is first dried and then mixed with different colors from natural material (including plants). The end product is a mixture of red and white paintings that are very eye-catching.
Once you arrive at the park, you will make all necessary clearances at the gate and then proceed to the center for visitors. From the center, you will then proceed to your hotel. After checking in at the hotel, you will prepare to be taken for a boat cruise at the Lake Ihema. The boat trip provides opportunities to spot crocodiles, hippos and other animals coming to bath or drink from the lake. Look out for the elusive Sitatunga (swamp antelope) and waterbucks. You can read more about the price of a safari in Akagera.
Wake up early and take you breakfast as you wait for the Guide/Driver to pick you up. This day is all about games drives. Our Guide will take you to some of the most exciting game areas to explore magnificent game viewings. You will go to different parts of the park while exploring the parks landscape including woodland forest, savanna plains, riverine forests and wetlands. During the morning game drive, watch out for hippos, Impala, warthogs, Topi, Zebras, spotted hyenas, giraffes, buffaloes, crocodiles, elephants and birds. The park Guide will play an important role in helping locate the lions, Rhinos and other elusive creatures.
Lunch will be a picnic in the open Savannah plains to allow you experience the unique feeling of dinning out in the African wild. After lunch, the driver will take you back to your hotel where you can relax and take a swim in the hotel swimming pool. You can choose to go for another afternoon game drive before the night game drive if you wish or go out specifically to spot the birds. Akagera is one of the top birding destinations in Rwanda with over 500 species recorded including the Papyrus Gonolek and Shoebill storks. The best place to spot the birds is at the vast wetlands found in the park.
The night game drive is designed to allow you spot the nocturnal animals like leopards, hyenas and mongooses, owls and primates
Wake up at your leisure, take breakfast and prepare for one last game drive in the park just in case you didn’t see some specific animals. Our Guide/Driver will meet with the park guide and take you to another section of the park for yet more wildlife encounters. After you are done with this game drive, it’s time to start the journey back to Kigali.
In case you missed the Kigali city tour or the cow dung paintings at the Nyakarambi village for some reason on the first day, this is the time to do it. Please note that this tour can be extended with a Nyungwe forest chimpanzee trekking. Let us know in advance if you prefer to have this extended.
Otherwise, continue for a drive to Kigali before you are dropped off at the Kigali international airport or at the accommodation of choice.

Excellent organization considering that Tony managed to plan the entire tour, permits for gorillas and chimpanzees included, just one day before departure. This is not taken for granted since the tour operator we had contacted months earlier canceled our trip 3 days before departure!
Our driver Tony, who also served as our guide, was always caring and attentive to our needs. Uganda is a country full of natural wonders, and being able to enjoy it peacefully with the right quality-price ratio allows for a full experience of all the activities
It was a solo yet memory filled experience right from my first inquiry to the last day of the trip. Everything was smooth. My tour guide Eddie was beyond friendly and had an eagles eye for even the smallest animals.
The most memorable moment was my first sight of the mighty Gorillas in Bwindi.
I highly appreciate and recommend friendly Gorillas safari
We had such a great time on our 2 day / 1 night Safari tour to Akegara National Park in Rwanda. Jado was our AMAZING tour guide who made sure we were cared for and had everything we needed during our time!
Prior to the trip, I had seamless communication with the Safari group who helped figure out exactly what Safari tour I wanted (1 day or more). They sent an example schedule as well as several lodging options. We ultimately chose the “budget” option which was the Rhino Lodge — it did not feel budget at all! It was GORGEOUS and the food was amazing. We even asked if we could adjust the schedule and they were more than happy to accommodate.
We had a fabulous time traveling to the park with Jado, getting settled and eating at the Rhino Lodge, participating in a half day safari that also included a water tour where we saw Rhinos, Crocodiles, Buffalos… and lots of birds! As soon as we drove into the park we saw an elephant and as we were leaving we saw Baboons. We slept and ate well and then the adventure began early the next day, where we had a full day of Safari through the park. We were able to see more Buffalos, impala, Baboons, Giraffes, rhinos, zebras, warthogs and even a rogue hippo wandering around on land. We unfortunately did not see any big cats (leopards or lions) but Jado certainly tried his best to find them.
Once we paid the initial fee prior to the tour, everything was included. This was an amazing trip, we felt very safe, and I would absolutely book again with this company. Thank you guys so much for being so great and easy!!!
Cannot recommend this company enough!!! Anthony and Brenda are fantastic and worked with us to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime. All expectations were not only met, but greatly exceeded! From our exhilarating itinerary to the memorable accommodations, every part of the experience was extraordinary.
All the activities including river rafting, game drives, gorilla/chimp/rhino treks and boat rides were spectacular, with stunning views and incredible wildlife sightings, and the food was fantastic throughout. Accommodations were wonderfully planned, and each place we stayed offered something different, but all were so lovely. The warmth and hospitality from everyone we met in Uganda is indescribable. What truly made this trip special, though, was our guide, Eddie. He was knowledgeable, professional, passionate, joyful, and also so attentive to our group’s needs.
We could not have asked for a better driver/guide – he went above and beyond to ensure we had a life-changing adventure every step of the way while simultaneously feeling like a member of the family. It was clear he genuinely cared about making sure we had the BEST time possible. This was more than a vacation – it was an adventure I’ll never forget, and I’m still majorly struggling with post-Uganda depression! Thank you Anthony, Brenda and Eddie for the most unforgettable experience ever. We miss you all!
we had the most amazing time in Uganda accompanied by our very Friendly tour guide Elias.
The support team that handled tour preparations were very kind and responded to every question we had in time. Bliss even went an extra mile to give us a video call during some of the sessions.
We were very lucky to see the rare tree climbing lions in the Ishasha sector or Queen Elizabeth while exiting for Bwindi.
I highly recommend this company because they met all our expectations and even delivered more than we imagined.
From the planning stages to the first meet and greet, Anthony, Brenda and their team went above and beyond to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime! Friendly Gorilla Safaris gave us everything we asked for while keeping in mind our mid-range budget.
They are excellent with communication, professional, patient, and were able to answer all our questions. Our itinerary was amazing with river rafting, game drives, chimp trek and of course the gorilla trek. Accommodations were great, food delicious and Eddie our driver/guide was fantastic! Highly recommend this company.
