What makes the Kingfisher bird so legendary

Fun fact: the tiny Malachite King Fisher, commonly seen around wetlands in Uganda, is often considered one of the most beautiful King Fisher species in Africa due to its dazzling blue and orange plumage

They are expert fishermen.

These birds have excellent eyesight that allows them to spot fish beneath the water’s surface.

They can accurately judge the position of their prey and dive at high speed to catch it. They feed on fish, frogs, insects, snakes, and other birds

They can hover in the air

Some species of the King Fisher bird, like the Pied King Fisher, can hover above the water for some time before diving to catch the fish

They are incredibly colorful

Many kingfisher birds display brilliant blue, green, orange, and white feathers, making them among the most beautiful birds in Africa

Not all Kingfishers eat fish

Although most King Fishers are most commonly known for feeding on fish, some species feed on insects, Frogs, Lizards, Crabs, and even small snakes

They have large, powerful beaks

These birds have long, pointed beaks, especially adapted for catching and holding the slippery prey. These beaks are very strong in nature, and once the prey is caught, it cannot escape from that strong beak

They build nests in tunnels

King Fishers often dig tunnels into the river banks, termite mounds, or the sandy banks where they lay their eggs and usually raise their chicks.

They make this a permanent place for their chicks to grow

They are found in very many habitats

Kingfishers can be seen around lakes, rivers, swamps, forests, and even open savannas throughout Uganda. They are common in the areas with savanna vegetation and lakes and rivers at the same time, like Lake Mburo National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Murchison Falls National Park, among others.

They are very patient hunters.

These birds are termed as very patient hunters because they take a lot of time to plan how to target and get hold of their prey. They sit motionless for long periods, waiting for their perfect time/moment to strike and have their prey in their hands.

They have excellent vision

These birds have a very nice and excellent vision. They are able to see spiot their prey and enemies from a very far away distance. The eyes can adjust to see both in the air and underwater, helping them hunt with remarkable precision. Their vision extends even into the night because they hunt at any time of their convenience

They are the favorites among the bird watchers.

These birds with their bright colors, unique calls, and spectacular hunting dives make King Fishers one of the most exciting birds to spot on a safari. They look so beautiful even when they are spotted from a very long distance, catching the sight of most of the people, tourists, and birders

How do they hunt?

The giant King Fishers hunt using the perch and wait technique. They sit motionless on the branches of the trees, scanning the water for the prey. Once the target is spotted, they dive rapidly headfirst into the water, using their heavy, gill-like bills to grab the fish or the frogs.

The hunting process

The wait: They sit quietly on a high vantage point overlooking rivers, streams, or lakes, patiently waiting for the movement.

The Dive: When the prey is sighted, they plunge into the water. They possess extraordinary eyesight capable of compensating for water refraction, ensuring an accurate strike. They also protect their eyes during high-speed dives using a special third eye lid called a nictitating membrane

The catch: Once the prey is seized, they break the water’s surface and fly back to their perch

The subduing: To prevent the prey from struggling, they repeatedly beat it against a hard branch

Swallowing: they maneuver the catch until it faces the head, and then swallow it as a whole.

Key adaptations that enable it to hunt its prey

Powerful beak: The bill is long, straight, and strong, perfectly designed for spearing and securing a larger prey like the crabs and fish

Specialized eyes: they have excellent binocular vision that judges distance and speed with precision

Nictitating membrane: A transparent third eyelid closes over their eyes upon impact, allowing them to see clearly underwater without damaging their eyes

Tips on where to spot it

Always look at the moving fresh water. Always focus on large permanent rivers, streams, dams, and lake shores. They avoid muddy and polluted waters where they cannot see the prey well

Overhanging vegetation. Scan dead branches, reed or low-hanging trees that stretch directly over the water. They require these elevated platforms to hunt

These birds can be timed well in the early mornings after sunrise at their hunting peak and are always active at this time.

They can also be spotted in the late afternoons on another course of feeding before dusk.

They often show up in the dry seasons when the water levels drop, fish and crabs become more concentrated in smaller pools, making hunting easier and kingfishers more active in those specific spots.

Where can they be found?

Kingfishers are widely distributed across Uganda, with over a dozen species found near water bodies, wetlands, and dense forests. The prime hot spots include Mabamba swamp, Lake Victoria Shores, while some National Parks offer an exceptional experience of these birds.

They are also found in Queen Elizabeth National Park, on a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, and Murchison Falls National Park, where they have the Blue-breasted Kingfisher and African Dwarf Kingfisher.

They are also found in Semuliki National Park, where the excellent rare chocolate-backed King Fisher is present

Conclusion

Uganda is a global birding paradise, hosting all three main King Fisher sub families ie the river, tree, and water king fishers. With nearly 40 recorded species, ranging from the highly visible pied kingfisher, they are celebrated for their incredible hunting skills and brilliant and indescribable plumage.

Because of their numbers, they are in various spots, for example, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Mabamba swamp, among others. These famous spots attract a number of tourists to their destinations.

The Pied King Fisher, the Woodland King Fisher, the Malachite King Fisher, and the Giant King Fisher have remained the dominant key species in Uganda, making it a famous spot.
