The 8 Days Exclusive Chimpanzee Safari in Uganda is a specialist primate itinerary for travelers who want to focus on chimpanzees across different habitats. It combines Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Budongo Forest, Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge, and Kalinzu Forest Reserve.
This is not a general wildlife safari with one chimpanzee stop. It is built for guests who want to understand Uganda’s chimpanzee experiences in depth. They visit a sanctuary setting on Lake Victoria, a forest near Murchison Falls, Uganda’s leading chimpanzee trekking destination in Kibale, the scenic Kyambura Gorge, and Kalinzu Forest near Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Your guide from Friendly Gorillas welcomes you at Entebbe International Airport or picks you up from your hotel in Entebbe. After a short briefing, you transfer to the Lake Victoria boat departure point for the Ngamba Island experience.
You board the boat to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a protected island home for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees. This visit gives guests an educational start before entering Uganda’s wild chimpanzee forests.
At the sanctuary, the team introduces you to the work done on the island. You learn about rescued chimpanzees, conservation, care, and why some chimpanzees cannot return to the wild. You observe the chimpanzees from approved viewing areas and learn about their behavior, social life, feeding routines, and individual stories.
After the sanctuary visit, return by boat to Entebbe. Spend the evening relaxing near Lake Victoria.
After breakfast, leave Entebbe and drive north toward the Budongo Forest and Murchison Falls region. The journey takes you through towns, farms, roadside markets, and northern Uganda landscapes. Depending on timing, you may stop for lunch along the way before continuing toward Budongo.
Budongo gives this itinerary its first wild chimpanzee forest setting. It is a useful contrast after Ngamba because guests move from a sanctuary environment to a natural forest experience.
Arrive at your lodge near Budongo or Murchison Falls, check in, and prepare for chimpanzee tracking the next morning.
Accommodation options in Murchison Falls or Budongo region:
After an early breakfast, your guide transfers you to the Budongo chimpanzee tracking briefing point. The forest guide explains the rules, safety guidance, and what guests should expect during the chimpanzee search. You then enter the forest with your guide.
Budongo offers a different chimpanzee experience from Kibale. The forest atmosphere, tree cover, birdlife, and guiding style make it a valuable part of a specialist chimpanzee itinerary.
Once you find the chimpanzees, you spend time observing feeding, climbing, grooming, calling, and movement through the forest. Sightings depend on chimpanzee location, weather, and forest conditions.
After tracking, return for lunch and rest.If timing allows, you may add a visit to the top of Murchison Falls or a short Nile experience. This should stay optional because the main focus of the tour is chimpanzees.
Accommodation options in Murchison Falls or Budongo region:
After breakfast, leave Budongo and begin the long transfer to Kibale Forest National Park. This is a major travel day, but it connects two important chimpanzee regions. The route passes through rural towns, farms, villages, and western Uganda landscapes.
As you approach Fort Portal and Kibale, the scenery becomes greener, with tea estates, crater lake areas, and forested sections.Kibale is the central point of this safari because it is Uganda’s strongest wild chimpanzee trekking destination. Research notes that Kibale has many chimpanzees, regular tracking sessions, and chimpanzee habituation as an option.
Arrive at your lodge in the evening, check in, and rest before the next day’s chimpanzee tracking.
Accommodation options in Kibale:
After breakfast, transfer to the Kibale park offices for registration and briefing. The ranger guides explain chimpanzee tracking rules, forest safety, and how you should behave around chimpanzees. You then enter Kibale Forest with your ranger guide.
Kibale is often the strongest chimpanzee experience of the itinerary. The forest feels alive with bird calls, monkeys, insects, and chimpanzee sounds. Once found, guests observe the chimpanzees as they feed, climb, groom, call, and move through the forest.
This day gives guests an important comparison with Budongo. They experience another forest setting, another chimpanzee community, and a different style of primate tracking.
After tracking, return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, add Bigodi Wetland Walk if desired. This adds monkeys, birds, wetland scenery, community life, and conservation value to the Kibale section.
Accommodation options in Kibale:
After breakfast, leave Kibale and transfer toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. The route passes crater landscapes, tea areas, farms, local towns, and views toward the Rwenzori region on clear days. This day links Kibale with the two southern chimpanzee experiences: Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest.
Arrive near Queen Elizabeth National Park and check in at your lodge.Depending on timing, you may enjoy a relaxed afternoon, crater lake view, or optional Kazinga Channel boat cruise. The boat cruise is useful if guests want hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants, and birds, but it should not distract from the chimpanzee focus.
Accommodation options in Queen Elizabeth National Park:
After breakfast, transfer to Kyambura Gorge for chimpanzee tracking.Kyambura gives you a very different setting from Kibale and Budongo. It is a forested gorge inside the wider Queen Elizabeth landscape, which makes the experience visually unique.
The guide briefs guests before entering the gorge. The walk may involve slopes, forest trails, and careful movement through the gorge environment.Chimpanzee sightings here can be less predictable than Kibale, but the experience has strong scenic value. Kyambura Gorge is a scenic underground forest with a moderate to low success rate, so expect steady slow paced but truly rewarding experience.
After the activity, return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, you may enjoy a relaxed drive, crater scenery, or a short Queen Elizabeth wildlife experience depending on timing.
Accommodation options in Queen Elizabeth National Park:
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kalinzu Forest Reserve for the final chimpanzee tracking experience of the safari.Kalinzu gives you another wild forest setting near Queen Elizabeth National Park. It adds useful comparison because the forest has its own chimpanzee community, guiding setup, terrain, and
Kalinzu is a strong chimpanzee trekking option near Queen Elizabeth National Park, with habituated chimpanzees and excellent biodiversity.
After the forest briefing, enter Kalinzu with your guide and search for chimpanzees. If found, guests observe their behavior and compare the experience with Ngamba, Budongo, Kibale, and Kyambura. After tracking, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. This is a long travel day, you should not book an early international flight.
Your guide drops you at your hotel in Kampala, hotel in Entebbe, or Entebbe International Airport depending on the final plan.
