At Friendly Gorillas, we recommend this tour for travelers who want gorilla trekking plus wildlife without adding too many days or going as far as Queen Elizabeth National Park. It suits couples, families with older children, solo travelers, photographers, and guests who want a comfortable short Uganda safari. It may not suit travelers who want lions, large predator sightings, or a full Big Five safari, since Lake Mburo is better known for plains wildlife, birds, lake scenery, and gentle safari activities.

The 5 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Lake Mburo Safari gives travelers like you a smart way to combine mountain gorillas with a lighter wildlife safari in western Uganda. It works well because Lake Mburo breaks the long journey between Kampala or Entebbe and Bwindi, while also adding zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, birds, and optional walking or boat experiences.
This itinerary gives you more value than a simple gorilla-only trip. You do not only drive to Bwindi, trek gorillas, and return. You enjoy a softer wildlife stop at Lake Mburo, then continue to Bwindi for one of Africa’s most moving wildlife encounters. The route feels practical, scenic, and easier to enjoy than rushing both directions in a short 3-day gorilla safari.

Your Friendly Gorillas guide meets you at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe after breakfast. After a short briefing, you begin the drive to Lake Mburo National Park.
The journey takes you through roadside towns, farms, local markets, and changing countryside. Depending on your timing, you may stop at the Equator for photos, coffee, or a short break before continuing toward western Uganda.
Lake Mburo is one of the most convenient wildlife parks from Kampala. It gives you a useful first safari stop without forcing you into a very long transfer on the first day. This makes the itinerary more comfortable, especially for travelers who do not want to drive straight to Bwindi in one stretch.
Arrive near the park, check in, and have lunch or a short rest depending on your arrival time.
In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in Lake Mburo National Park. Your guide looks for zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs, topis, waterbucks, birds, and other wildlife. The park’s open landscapes, acacia woodland, and lake views create a gentle start to your Uganda safari.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Accommodation options near Lake Mburo:
Wake up early for a final activity in Lake Mburo before continuing to Bwindi. Depending on your confirmed package and interests, you may take a morning game drive, guided nature walk, or optional boat ride.
A guided nature walk is one of the best activities in Lake Mburo because it gives you a ground-level safari experience with an armed ranger guide. You may see tracks, plants, smaller wildlife, birds, and open landscapes from a slower and more personal angle.
If you prefer a calmer activity, a boat ride on Lake Mburo gives you lake scenery, birds, hippos, and a different view of the park.
After the activity, return to the lodge for breakfast or continue with the planned schedule. You then begin the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The route takes you through Mbarara, rural towns, farms, and eventually the cooler highlands of southwestern Uganda. As you approach Bwindi, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with terraced hills, winding roads, and forested slopes.
Arrive at your lodge near your assigned gorilla trekking sector, check in, have dinner, and rest before the big day.
Accommodation options in Bwindi:
Wake up early, have breakfast, and transfer to the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. This is the main highlight of the safari.
The ranger guides explain trekking rules, forest safety, gorilla behavior, and how to act when you reach the gorilla family. After briefing, you join your assigned trekking group and enter Bwindi with ranger guides and trackers.
The trek can take a shorter or longer time depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. Some treks feel moderate, while others involve steeper and muddier trails. Your guides pace the walk carefully and help your group move safely through the forest.
When you find the gorillas, you spend up to one hour with them. You may watch a silverback resting, mothers feeding, young gorillas playing, or the family moving quietly through the forest.
This hour is the reason many travelers come to Uganda. It feels personal, calm, and deeply rewarding. At Friendly Gorillas, we plan the logistics carefully so you can focus on the experience rather than worrying about permits, timing, or transfers.
After the trek, return to the park offices and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Your guide then transfers you back to the lodge for lunch and rest.
If time and energy allow, you may add a Batwa cultural experience or community visit near Bwindi.
Accommodation options in Bwindi:
After breakfast, you may enjoy a relaxed morning around Bwindi before starting the return journey. This day gives you a more comfortable pace than returning directly from Bwindi to Kampala or Entebbe.
If you enjoy culture, you may add a Batwa cultural experience or local community walk. This helps you understand the people who live around the forest and adds a human side to your gorilla safari.
After the optional experience, begin the transfer back toward the Lake Mburo or Mbarara area. This breaks the long return drive and gives you more comfort before the final day.
The drive takes you through the Kigezi highlands, villages, farms, and western Uganda’s rolling landscapes. You may stop for lunch along the way before continuing to your overnight lodge.
Arrive in the evening, check in, and relax.
Accommodation options near Lake Mburo or Mbarara:
After breakfast, you begin the final journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. If you stayed near Lake Mburo and your schedule allows, you may add a short morning activity before leaving.
This final drive gives you time to enjoy the countryside one more time. You pass farms, towns, roadside markets, and local communities before continuing toward central Uganda.
You may stop at the Equator for photos, shopping, or a short break if you did not stop there earlier.
Your guide drops you at your hotel in Kampala, your hotel in Entebbe, or Entebbe International Airport depending on your final plan. If you have an evening flight, we recommend careful timing so the road transfer works with airport check-in.

From the planning stages to the first meet and greet, Anthony, Brenda and their team went above and beyond to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime! Friendly Gorilla Safaris gave us everything we asked for while keeping in mind our mid-range budget.
They are excellent with communication, professional, patient, and were able to answer all our questions. Our itinerary was amazing with river rafting, game drives, chimp trek and of course the gorilla trek. Accommodations were great, food delicious and Eddie our driver/guide was fantastic! Highly recommend this company.
we had the most amazing time in Uganda accompanied by our very Friendly tour guide Elias.
The support team that handled tour preparations were very kind and responded to every question we had in time. Bliss even went an extra mile to give us a video call during some of the sessions.
We were very lucky to see the rare tree climbing lions in the Ishasha sector or Queen Elizabeth while exiting for Bwindi.
I highly recommend this company because they met all our expectations and even delivered more than we imagined.
It was a solo yet memory filled experience right from my first inquiry to the last day of the trip. Everything was smooth. My tour guide Eddie was beyond friendly and had an eagles eye for even the smallest animals.
The most memorable moment was my first sight of the mighty Gorillas in Bwindi.
I highly appreciate and recommend friendly Gorillas safari
We had such a great time on our 2 day / 1 night Safari tour to Akegara National Park in Rwanda. Jado was our AMAZING tour guide who made sure we were cared for and had everything we needed during our time!
Prior to the trip, I had seamless communication with the Safari group who helped figure out exactly what Safari tour I wanted (1 day or more). They sent an example schedule as well as several lodging options. We ultimately chose the “budget” option which was the Rhino Lodge — it did not feel budget at all! It was GORGEOUS and the food was amazing. We even asked if we could adjust the schedule and they were more than happy to accommodate.
We had a fabulous time traveling to the park with Jado, getting settled and eating at the Rhino Lodge, participating in a half day safari that also included a water tour where we saw Rhinos, Crocodiles, Buffalos… and lots of birds! As soon as we drove into the park we saw an elephant and as we were leaving we saw Baboons. We slept and ate well and then the adventure began early the next day, where we had a full day of Safari through the park. We were able to see more Buffalos, impala, Baboons, Giraffes, rhinos, zebras, warthogs and even a rogue hippo wandering around on land. We unfortunately did not see any big cats (leopards or lions) but Jado certainly tried his best to find them.
Once we paid the initial fee prior to the tour, everything was included. This was an amazing trip, we felt very safe, and I would absolutely book again with this company. Thank you guys so much for being so great and easy!!!
Excellent organization considering that Tony managed to plan the entire tour, permits for gorillas and chimpanzees included, just one day before departure. This is not taken for granted since the tour operator we had contacted months earlier canceled our trip 3 days before departure!
Our driver Tony, who also served as our guide, was always caring and attentive to our needs. Uganda is a country full of natural wonders, and being able to enjoy it peacefully with the right quality-price ratio allows for a full experience of all the activities
Cannot recommend this company enough!!! Anthony and Brenda are fantastic and worked with us to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime. All expectations were not only met, but greatly exceeded! From our exhilarating itinerary to the memorable accommodations, every part of the experience was extraordinary.
All the activities including river rafting, game drives, gorilla/chimp/rhino treks and boat rides were spectacular, with stunning views and incredible wildlife sightings, and the food was fantastic throughout. Accommodations were wonderfully planned, and each place we stayed offered something different, but all were so lovely. The warmth and hospitality from everyone we met in Uganda is indescribable. What truly made this trip special, though, was our guide, Eddie. He was knowledgeable, professional, passionate, joyful, and also so attentive to our group’s needs.
We could not have asked for a better driver/guide – he went above and beyond to ensure we had a life-changing adventure every step of the way while simultaneously feeling like a member of the family. It was clear he genuinely cared about making sure we had the BEST time possible. This was more than a vacation – it was an adventure I’ll never forget, and I’m still majorly struggling with post-Uganda depression! Thank you Anthony, Brenda and Eddie for the most unforgettable experience ever. We miss you all!
