At Friendly Gorillas, we recommend this tour for travelers who want a premium East Africa safari with both primates and big game. It suits couples, honeymooners, photographers, first-time visitors to Africa, and guests who want one well-planned trip instead of booking Uganda and Kenya separately. It is not ideal for travelers on a tight budget, guests who dislike flights between countries, or visitors who only want a short gorilla trekking trip.

Your safari begins when you arrive at Entebbe International Airport. Your Friendly Gorillas guide welcomes you, helps with your luggage, and transfers you to your hotel in Kampala.
This arrival day gives you time to rest after your flight and prepare for the gorilla section of the safari. You can relax at the hotel, exchange money if needed, and review the travel plan with your guide.
Your guide gives you a short briefing about the Uganda route, gorilla trekking expectations, road transfer times, lodge category, and the later connection to Kenya.
After breakfast, your guide picks you up from the hotel and starts the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda.
This is a long but scenic travel day. You drive pass towns, roadside markets, farms, banana plantations, cattle areas, and rolling hills. Depending on timing, you may stop at the Equator for photos before continuing toward Mbarara for lunch.
After lunch, the scenery becomes more dramatic as you approach the Kigezi highlands. The region has terraced hills, cooler weather, winding roads, and beautiful rural landscapes.
Bwindi has several gorilla trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Your lodge depends on the confirmed gorilla permit sector. At Friendly Gorillas, we match your accommodation to the sector to reduce unnecessary movement on trekking morning.
Arrive in the evening, check in, have dinner, and rest before the gorilla trek.
Wake up early, have breakfast, and transfer to the park headquarters for gorilla trekking briefing. This is one of the most important days of the whole safari.
The ranger guides explain the rules, safety guidelines, forest conditions, and how to behave around the gorillas. After briefing, you enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers.
The trek may take a shorter or longer time depending on where the gorilla family moved overnight. Bwindi can be steep, muddy, and thick, so you should move at a steady pace and listen carefully to your guides.
When you find the gorillas, you spend up to one hour with them. You may watch a silverback resting, mothers feeding, young gorillas playing, or the family moving through the forest.
This hour gives the safari its emotional weight. Many travelers come to East Africa for big cats and open plains, but gorilla trekking often becomes the memory they talk about most.
After the trek, return to the park offices and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Your guide then transfers you back to the lodge for rest.
If you still have enough time and energy, you may add a Batwa cultural experience or local community visit near Bwindi.
After breakfast, leave Bwindi and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. This shorter transfer gives you time to recover after gorilla trekking instead of rushing back to the city.
Lake Bunyonyi adds a relaxed and scenic break between the gorilla experience and the Kenya safari section. The lake is known for calm waters, terraced hills, island views, birds, and a peaceful highland atmosphere.
Spend the afternoon at leisure. You may relax at the lodge, take photos, or add an optional canoe ride, motorboat trip, island visit, or community walk.
This day gives the itinerary better balance. Guests get time to rest before flying to Kenya, which helps the Masai Mara section feel more enjoyable
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. This is a long road transfer, so we recommend starting early.
You drive through Kabale, Mbarara, and central Uganda, with lunch along the way. The route gives you another chance to enjoy Uganda’s countryside, roadside markets, farms, and towns.
Depending on your flight plan to Kenya, you may overnight in Kampala or Entebbe. This buffer night is useful because it reduces the risk of rushing from a long road transfer into a regional flight connection.
At Friendly Gorillas, we recommend keeping this night in the itinerary for smoother logistics and better you comfort
After breakfast, your guide transfers you to Entebbe International Airport for your flight to Nairobi. On arrival in Kenya, you connect with your Kenya safari team and continue toward the Masai Mara Game reserve.
Depending on flight schedules and budget, the connection to Masai Mara may be by road from Nairobi or by domestic flight to a Mara airstrip. A fly-in option costs more but saves time and gives guests more energy for game viewing.
If traveling by road, the drive takes you through Kenya’s countryside and the Great Rift Valley region before entering the Masai Mara area. If flying, you arrive faster and transfer from the airstrip to your lodge or camp.
Depending on arrival time, you may enjoy an afternoon or evening game drive. This gives your first taste of the Mara’s wide plains and wildlife-rich landscapes.
Wake up early for a full day of wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara. The early morning hours are important because predators and plains wildlife tend to be more active before the heat builds.
Your guide explores productive game-viewing areas while looking for lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, hyenas, cheetahs, and many birds. Depending on season and movement, you may also see large herds spread across the plains.
The benefit of the Masai Mara section is variety and drama. After the quiet intensity of gorilla trekking, the Mara gives open landscapes, predator movement, large herds, and classic safari scenes.
You may return to the lodge for lunch or take a packed lunch for a longer game drive, depending on the final plan.
In the afternoon, continue exploring the reserve or conservancy area. The light becomes softer, which helps photography and makes the landscape more beautiful.
Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight stay
After breakfast, spend another full day in the Masai Mara. A second full day gives you better value because wildlife sightings change daily.
Your guide may revisit productive areas or explore different sections depending on sightings, weather, and you interests. This flexibility improves your chances of varied wildlife encounters.
If you travel during migration season, your guide may focus on areas where wildebeest and zebra herds are active. Outside migration season, the Mara still offers excellent resident wildlife and big cat viewing.
This second full day helps the itinerary feel complete. A rushed one-night or two-night Mara visit often leaves guests wanting more. Three nights gives better chances for quality sightings and a more relaxed pace.
Optional activities may include a hot air balloon safari, Maasai cultural visit, or sundowner experience depending on lodge location and you preference.
Wake up early for a final game drive in the Masai Mara. This gives you one more chance to enjoy the wildlife before leaving the reserve.
The final morning can be rewarding because sightings often happen when guests least expect them. Your guide looks for wildlife based on recent movement and the best areas near your route out.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for breakfast or check out with a packed plan, depending on timing.
You then transfer back to Nairobi by road or fly from a Mara airstrip to Nairobi, depending on the confirmed package.
Arrive in Nairobi and check in at your hotel. The overnight stay gives you a safer and more comfortable ending before your international departure.

We had such a great time on our 2 day / 1 night Safari tour to Akegara National Park in Rwanda. Jado was our AMAZING tour guide who made sure we were cared for and had everything we needed during our time!
Prior to the trip, I had seamless communication with the Safari group who helped figure out exactly what Safari tour I wanted (1 day or more). They sent an example schedule as well as several lodging options. We ultimately chose the “budget” option which was the Rhino Lodge — it did not feel budget at all! It was GORGEOUS and the food was amazing. We even asked if we could adjust the schedule and they were more than happy to accommodate.
We had a fabulous time traveling to the park with Jado, getting settled and eating at the Rhino Lodge, participating in a half day safari that also included a water tour where we saw Rhinos, Crocodiles, Buffalos… and lots of birds! As soon as we drove into the park we saw an elephant and as we were leaving we saw Baboons. We slept and ate well and then the adventure began early the next day, where we had a full day of Safari through the park. We were able to see more Buffalos, impala, Baboons, Giraffes, rhinos, zebras, warthogs and even a rogue hippo wandering around on land. We unfortunately did not see any big cats (leopards or lions) but Jado certainly tried his best to find them.
Once we paid the initial fee prior to the tour, everything was included. This was an amazing trip, we felt very safe, and I would absolutely book again with this company. Thank you guys so much for being so great and easy!!!
It was a solo yet memory filled experience right from my first inquiry to the last day of the trip. Everything was smooth. My tour guide Eddie was beyond friendly and had an eagles eye for even the smallest animals.
The most memorable moment was my first sight of the mighty Gorillas in Bwindi.
I highly appreciate and recommend friendly Gorillas safari
we had the most amazing time in Uganda accompanied by our very Friendly tour guide Elias.
The support team that handled tour preparations were very kind and responded to every question we had in time. Bliss even went an extra mile to give us a video call during some of the sessions.
We were very lucky to see the rare tree climbing lions in the Ishasha sector or Queen Elizabeth while exiting for Bwindi.
I highly recommend this company because they met all our expectations and even delivered more than we imagined.
Cannot recommend this company enough!!! Anthony and Brenda are fantastic and worked with us to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime. All expectations were not only met, but greatly exceeded! From our exhilarating itinerary to the memorable accommodations, every part of the experience was extraordinary.
All the activities including river rafting, game drives, gorilla/chimp/rhino treks and boat rides were spectacular, with stunning views and incredible wildlife sightings, and the food was fantastic throughout. Accommodations were wonderfully planned, and each place we stayed offered something different, but all were so lovely. The warmth and hospitality from everyone we met in Uganda is indescribable. What truly made this trip special, though, was our guide, Eddie. He was knowledgeable, professional, passionate, joyful, and also so attentive to our group’s needs.
We could not have asked for a better driver/guide – he went above and beyond to ensure we had a life-changing adventure every step of the way while simultaneously feeling like a member of the family. It was clear he genuinely cared about making sure we had the BEST time possible. This was more than a vacation – it was an adventure I’ll never forget, and I’m still majorly struggling with post-Uganda depression! Thank you Anthony, Brenda and Eddie for the most unforgettable experience ever. We miss you all!
Excellent organization considering that Tony managed to plan the entire tour, permits for gorillas and chimpanzees included, just one day before departure. This is not taken for granted since the tour operator we had contacted months earlier canceled our trip 3 days before departure!
Our driver Tony, who also served as our guide, was always caring and attentive to our needs. Uganda is a country full of natural wonders, and being able to enjoy it peacefully with the right quality-price ratio allows for a full experience of all the activities
From the planning stages to the first meet and greet, Anthony, Brenda and their team went above and beyond to ensure we had the trip of a lifetime! Friendly Gorilla Safaris gave us everything we asked for while keeping in mind our mid-range budget.
They are excellent with communication, professional, patient, and were able to answer all our questions. Our itinerary was amazing with river rafting, game drives, chimp trek and of course the gorilla trek. Accommodations were great, food delicious and Eddie our driver/guide was fantastic! Highly recommend this company.
