Frequently Asked Questions

How many gorilla families are in Mgahinga?

There is only one habituated mountain gorilla group in the park, known as the Nyakagezi gorilla family. Because of this, only 8 gorilla tracking permits are issued per day, making early booking crucial. The maximum number of visitors per family in a day is 8 people, and there fore meaning that no extra people can visit that gorilla family that day.

Can I track both Gorillas and Golden Monkeys?

Yes. Mgahinga is famous for the phrase “Where Gold Meets Silver” because it is the only place in Uganda where endangered mountain gorillas share a habitat with rare golden monkeys. You can combine both activities across a multi-day itinerary and have the best stay in Uganda. Both experiences are among the most enjoyable moments, since most people engage in these activities and therefore bookings are always made early to avoid delays

How long and difficult are the hikes?

Gorilla Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours, plus 1 hour spent strictly with the gorillas. The terrain is steep and volcanic, making it moderately to highly strenuous depending on where the family moved the night before. These trails need someone to move steadily and gently since they are always very slippery. It is advisable to always try to move on these trails in the dry season since the trails are usually dry. However, even in the wet season, Gorilla trekking can also be possible and enjoyable on the slippery trails

What should I pack?

The weather changes rapidly, so you should bring Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots; long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against stinging nettles; thick gardening gloves for gripping forest vegetation; a lightweight rain jacket or poncho Insect repellent with DEET that does not give access to the insects to the body
