Sempaya Hot Springs

Introduction

The Sempaya hot springs are located in the Semuliki National Park. They are categorized into two, i.e., the male hot springs and the female hot springs, located at different sites.

These hot springs are found in Ntanda Council, in the western region of Uganda, in the district of Bundibugyo, approximately 70km from Fort Portal town

It got its name from a Swahili word, “Sehemu mbaya,” which meant a hard rock to penetrate during the construction of the Fort Portal- Bundibugyo Road

Formation of the hot spring

Scientifically, the hot springs were formed by the appearance of geothermally heated underground water from the earth’s layer, which increases the temperature of the underground rocks.

Later on, the water penetrates the hot rocks, which makes the water heated before coming above on the earth’s surface.

Hot springs are made by fissures spreading deep near the exceptional hot temperatures of the earth’s layer, and water moving down is heated and forced back up with much pressure to produce the bubbles

Physical appearance of the springs

The male hot springs (Bitente)

The male hot springs are also known as Bitente, which originated its name from a man who was picked by some men and decided to keep him. After a period of some days, he went out hunting, where he never returned home.

After three days, the friends decided to look for him, only to find out only the spear he had pierced in the ground, and that’s where the male hot springs got its name.

The male hot spring is a large, dark green pool stretching about 12m in diameter, full of hot water and steam

It is thick, always bubbling, and has a sulphuric smell and is surrounded by vast. This one is less visited compared to the female hot spring.

It has extreme temperatures compared to the female hot springs; these are close to 103 degrees Celsius

It is bigger than the female in terms of size; the female is a small geyser, and the male is a massive, expansive pool spanning roughly 12m in diameter

Female hot springs (Nyansimbi)

This hot spring is known as Nyansimbi, the female hot springs. Nyansimbi was the wife of Bitente, who got lost while on a hunt.

The female hot springs got their name from Nyansimbi after she went out to look for her lost husband in the bush. After some time, she later also disappeared from the forest. When people went out to look for her, they found only her clothes and therefore got their name from there.

The female hot springs are a more visually striking zone in the area, attracting a lot of visitors, and therefore, it’s a hot spot and a major attraction in the area

It’s frequently visited by tourists all over the world, compared to the male hot springs, because it’s near the entrance, and it has unique characteristics

It features clear crystal boiling water that forms steam, and this steam is very hot to the extent that it even cooks matooke, the local food in Uganda

There exists a white crust of mineral deposits that include salt and other minerals, and these ones are used for different economic and cultural purposes

It vigorously shoots geyser-like plumes of boiling water up to 2m high, making it a significant feature to watch for a number of people

The atmosphere

The area has a thick white steam continuously rising into the air, contrasting vividly with the deep green canopy of the neighboring Ituri forest

Many people come near the hot springs to witness its jungle interactivity, where they come to embrace the unique, surreal experience of boiling eggs and plantains in the steaming pools, filling the air with the earthy scent of the forest mixed with sulfurous hot springs

What makes them so legendary/special

The male and female hot springs.

These are just located on a 10-minute walk from each other, connected by raised wooden boardwalks. The male is the most visually exciting of the two, very dramatic with bubbling geysers

A natural Kitchen.

This is termed a natural kitchen because the waters move above the normal temperature. It’s a fun, interactive, and enjoyable experience for visitors. It can demonstrate how to boil eggs and bananas in a natural pool, providing a memorable experience for the visitors

Cultural and spiritual significance.

The original Bamaka clan considered it as a local folklore that dictates that male and female ancestors disappeared into the spots where the springs are today. The clan still visits the site annually to perform traditional rituals and honor their ancestors

A biodiversity hotspot

The trail takes you straight to the Eastern edge of the Ituri forest, which extends to the DRC. Visitors often encounter various primates, exotic butterflies, and birds

Intense geothermal science

Unlike other springs, this one exists with a hat and very high pressure of volcanic and electronic activity deep beneath the earth’s crust, which heats underground water and forces it violently to the surface.
