Introduction to the Ssese Islands

Les îles Ssese sont un archipel luxuriant de 84 îles niché dans le coin nord-ouest de Lac Victoria, Uganda. Functioning as the Kalangala district, these tropical islands are famous for their white sandy beaches, deep forests, and relaxed island atmosphere. It is a premier destination for weekend getaways, nature lovers, and honeymooners looking to escape the mainland hustle.

The islands occupy the northwestern corner of Lake Nalubaale, commonly known as Lake Victoria, and this is the second-biggest freshwater lake in the world. The largest island in the archipelago is called Bugala Island, which accounts for more than half of the archipelago’s land area.

Its largest town is Kalangala, which serves as the headquarters of the district that shares its name, Kalangala District. It is located approximately 51 kilometres across the water southwest of Entebbe in Wakiso District on the Ugandan mainland

Ce qui le rend très unique

The Lush Forests, with high tropical rainforests, cover large parts of the islands, perfect for quiet promenades dans la nature.

Unique primates, as it is home to colobus monkeys and vervet monkeys swinging through the trees, and rare Antelopes. The swampy areas shelter the rare and elusive sitatunga antelope, and birdwatching with over 200 bird species living across the archipelago.

The Ancient Spiritual Roots: Before European arrival, the islands served as a major spiritual center in the region, with a traditional heritage inhabited by the Bantu-speaking Bassese tribe, historically known as master sailors and canoe builders.

Foire aux questions

Which is the best island to visit first?

There are many different islands near the Ssesse area in the Kalangala District; they are all independent islands on their own. Bugala Island is the top choice for first-time visitors. It is the largest, most populated, and most developed island in the archipelago. It houses the main administrative center of Kalangala Town, where you will find the most diverse accommodation options, banking facilities, and activities.

What are the other major islands to explore?

A number of islands exist in the area. Many of them are interesting to explore and have different attractions, features, and activities. Beyond Bugala, notable destinations include Ngamba Island (a world-famous chimpanzee sanctuary), Banda Island (ideal for quiet, rustic camping), and Bulago Island (home to cliffs and upscale eco-resorts).

How many islands are there, and are they inhabited?

There are 84 islands in total. Only 43 of them are permanently inhabited, while the remaining half consist of small fishing communities, private properties, or untouched natural habitats. This is quite a very huge number and they can’t be found everywhere in the world. They all attract visitors from different locations, making it one of the best destinations to visit.
