Overview

The 6 Days Uganda Chimpanzee and Gorilla Habituation Safari is a premium primate itinerary for travelers who want more time with Uganda’s great apes. It combines chimpanzee habituation in Kibale Forest National Park with gorilla habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

This safari is different from normal chimpanzee tracking and gorilla trekking. Standard activities give you shorter viewing time once the primates are found. Habituation experiences are longer, more detailed, and better suited for photographers, primate lovers, researchers, and conservation-focused travelers.

Travel with us on a premium primate route planned around permits, comfort, forest timing, and guest fitness.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Kibale Forest National Park

Your guide from Friendly Gorillas meets you at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe after breakfast. After a short briefing, you begin the journey to Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda.

The route takes you through towns, farms, roadside markets, tea-growing areas, and green countryside. As you approach Fort Portal and Kibale, the scenery becomes cooler and more forested.

This first day prepares you for the chimpanzee habituation experience. You arrive near Kibale, check in at your lodge, and rest before the early forest activity the next morning.

Your guide confirms the reporting time, what to carry, and what to expect during chimpanzee habituation.

Accommodation options in Kibale:

  • Budget: Kibale Forest Guest House
  • Standard: Isunga Safari Lodge
  • Luxury: Kyaninga Safari Lodge or Turaco Treetops

Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest

Wake up early and have breakfast. Your guide transfers you to the Kibale park offices for registration and briefing.
The ranger guides explain chimpanzee habituation rules, forest safety, and how guests should behave around chimpanzees. You then enter the forest with the guiding team.

Chimpanzee habituation gives guests a deeper experience than standard tracking. You spend more time following, watching, and learning about chimpanzees as they feed, climb, call, groom, move, and interact.

This activity is valuable because it helps you understand chimpanzee behavior in a fuller way. It is especially useful for photographers and primate lovers who want more time in the forest.

After the experience, return to your lodge for rest. This is usually an active forest day, so we recommend keeping the evening relaxed.

Accommodation options in Kibale

  • Budget: Kibale Forest Guest House
  • Standard: Isunga Safari Lodge
  • Luxury: Kyaninga Safari Lodge or Turaco Treetops

Day 3: Bigodi Wetland Walk and Transfer Toward Queen Elizabeth or Lake Bunyonyi Route

After breakfast, you may enjoy Bigodi Wetland Walk before leaving Kibale. This activity adds birds, monkeys, wetlands, community life, and conservation value to the Kibale section.

Bigodi is a useful soft activity after the heavier chimpanzee habituation day. It gives you a slower experience with local guides and wetland scenery.

After Bigodi, begin the journey toward southwestern Uganda. Depending on the final route and lodge availability, you may overnight near Queen Elizabeth, Ishasha, Kabale, or Lake Bunyonyi to break the journey toward Bwindi.

This transfer day connects the chimpanzee section with the gorilla section. It also gives you scenic views of western Uganda’s crater areas, farms, highlands, and rural communities.

Accommodation Options near Queen Elizabeth, Kabale, or Lake Bunyonyi

  • Budget: Simple lodge or guesthouse
  • Standard: Comfortable midrange lodge
  • Luxury: Best available upgraded lodge or similar

Day 4: Transfer to Southern Bwindi and Relax Before Gorilla Habituation

After breakfast, continue the journey to southern Bwindi, usually the Rushaga region depending on the confirmed gorilla habituation permit.

This day should stay relaxed because the next day can be physically demanding. Arrive near Bwindi, check in at your lodge, and prepare for the gorilla habituation experience.

Your guide briefs you on what to carry, the expected reporting time, forest conditions, porter support, and how the habituation experience differs from standard gorilla trekking.

At Friendly Gorillas, we recommend using this evening to rest, organize your hiking clothes, charge camera batteries, and prepare enough water and snacks for the next day.

Accommodation options in southern Bwindi

  • Budget: Rafiki Gorilla Lodge or Ride 4 a Woman
  • Standard: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge or similar
  • Luxury: Mahogany Springs or similar luxury lodge

Day 5: Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Wake up early and have breakfast at the lodge. Your guide transfers you to the park headquarters for registration and briefing.
The ranger guides explain gorilla habituation rules, forest safety, group conduct, and what you should expect during the experience. You then enter the forest with ranger guides, trackers, and habituation staff where applicable.

Gorilla habituation offers a deeper experience than standard trekking. You spend longer observing a gorilla group under habituation, following park rules and ranger guidance throughout the activity.

You may observe feeding, movement, family structure, vocalizations, interactions, resting behavior, and the careful process of helping gorillas become used to controlled human presence for conservation tourism.

This is the main highlight of the safari. It gives you more learning, more time, and a stronger connection to Bwindi’s conservation story.
After the experience, return to the lodge for rest. Keep the evening quiet because the forest day can be long and tiring.

Accommodation options in southern Bwindi:

  • Budget: Rafiki Gorilla Lodge or Ride 4 a Woman
  • Standard: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge or similar
  • Luxury: Mahogany Springs or similar luxury lodge

Day 6: Transfer Back to Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali depending on the final travel plan.
If ending in Kigali, the transfer from southern Bwindi is usually shorter and more practical. Your guide assists with border crossing and continues to Kigali city or the airport.

If ending in Kampala or Entebbe, this will be a long road transfer, so we recommend starting early. You can stop for lunch along the way and continue through southwestern and central Uganda.

Depending on timing, you may add a short scenic stop at Lake Bunyonyi or the Equator, but the day should not be overloaded.
Your guide drops you at your hotel, airport, or agreed location.

This marks the end of your 6 Days Uganda Chimpanzee and Gorilla Habituation Safari with Friendly Gorillas Safaris.
