Introduction to the Ssese Islands

Las Islas Ssese son un exuberante archipiélago de 84 islas ubicadas en la esquina noroeste de lago victoria, Uganda. Functioning as the Kalangala district, these tropical islands are famous for their white sandy beaches, deep forests, and relaxed island atmosphere. It is a premier destination for weekend getaways, nature lovers, and honeymooners looking to escape the mainland hustle.

The islands occupy the northwestern corner of Lake Nalubaale, commonly known as Lake Victoria, and this is the second-biggest freshwater lake in the world. The largest island in the archipelago is called Bugala Island, which accounts for more than half of the archipelago’s land area.

Its largest town is Kalangala, which serves as the headquarters of the district that shares its name, Kalangala District. It is located approximately 51 kilometres across the water southwest of Entebbe in Wakiso District on the Ugandan mainland
